“Just up from the shaft,”20 wrote Hine of his photo of boys who worked as nippers and drivers a mile below ground.

After his short stay in South Pittston, Hine went across the country, taking more pictures of children at work. He photographed “newsies,” the boys—and a few girls—who sold newspapers on city streets. He saw children working on farms and inside all sorts of factories. Hine continued working for the NCLC until 1918, traveling a total of 100,000 miles as he crisscrossed the country. He took more than 7,000 pictures of American children at work. Many of the pictures appeared in magazines or were shown during lectures. Historian Walter Trattner wrote that the photos “aroused public sentiment against child labor in a way that no printed page or public lecture could.”23
